A fluorosilane surface treatment. On hydrolysis it releases a low-molecular-weight alcohol, and the silanols it forms bond to hydroxyl and other oxygen-containing groups on the substrate, leaving a self-assembled fluorosilicone layer one molecule thick. The treated surface has very low surface energy: it repels water and oil and resists staining. It is used on electronics and on stone, glass, ceramics, fumed silica and glass fibre.
