Silicones are in most modern cosmetics because of how they feel and how they behave on skin and hair: they spread easily, leave a light, non-greasy finish, let skin breathe, and resist water and sweat. Different silicone structures deliver each of those properties.

Film formers for long-wear products

Trimethylsiloxysilicate (INCI) is an MQ silicone resin. It forms a flexible, water-repellent film that holds pigments in place, which is why it is used for transfer resistance and staying power in lipsticks, foundations and mascaras, and for water resistance in sun care.

Emollients and shine

Trimethyl pentaphenyl trisiloxane is a phenyl silicone with a high refractive index. It adds gloss and colour payoff to lip and colour products, smooths hair, and acts as an emollient and skin conditioner. Dimethicone — polydimethylsiloxane — is the classic silicone emollient, used for slip and a protective, breathable film.

Powders for texture

Polymethylsilsesquioxane is a spherical silicone resin powder. It gives a soft, silky feel, blurs the look of fine lines and absorbs oil, and improves how pigments disperse in powders and emulsions.

Intermediates for modified silicones

Heptamethyltrisiloxane is the starting point for many silicone surfactants and modified silicone fluids used in personal care, made by grafting polyether or other groups onto its Si–H bond.
